Is 500 GB Enough Storage For XBOX One? [vs. 1TB – Answered!]

How much storage space is enough? Was 30 GB sufficient?

What about 60 or 120 gigabytes? But what about 2 TB?

I say it’s impossible to have enough. Why not make it so that all consoles have extra hard drive slots and USB 3.1 ports so that you can also add external drives?

It could happen someday.

The truth is that everyone has different storage needs. Modern AAA games can often be between 80 and 100 GB in size.

Some games, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Destiny 2: Beyond Light, even have the nerve to be 200 GB or more.

Is 500 GB of storage enough for the Xbox One?

A 1 TB console is a must-have if you want to keep up with new Xbox One games and build a large library of digital games. If you only want to play a few games, 500 GB should be enough. All of it comes down to how you play games.

People who play a lot of games but have small hard drives will have to delete games and carefully choose which ones they want to have ready to go.

Don’t worry, though. If you sign up for Game Pass, you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything.

With Game Pass, you can stream games from the cloud instead of installing them.

That means that if you have a good internet connection, you can try out games right away.

You can even do it on the go if you download the Android app for Game Pass.

The 1 TB is a good place to start if you want your console games to feel safer and more accessible.

I would even suggest installing an internal drive that is bigger and using storage devices that aren’t built into the computer.

If you want to avoid using external drives, you should only need a 4 TB drive.

How Much Storage Do I Need to Play Games?

It’s hard to give a direct answer to this question. I’ve made a list of different ways that you might play games.

There will be a suggestion for how much storage is enough next to the description of the gamer’s play style.

Gaming Habits and Storage Suggestions

You like to keep up with new games and play a lot of different ones.

Start with a console with 1 TB of storage. You might also want to add a 2TB external hard drive or replace the one that’s already there with a 4TB drive.

You only play one or two games, but you do it all the time.

The 500 GB is enough to keep up with just one or two games. Even if both games are the biggest ones on the market, like Call of Duty, Destiny 2, FFXIV, FIFA, or NB2K.

You are going to play the same games as your friends.

You’ll want the one with 1 TB. Most gaming groups play the same one or two games over and over, but they also want to try out a lot of new and popular games.

You want to play old games because you miss them.

Surprisingly, 500GB should be enough to store a good collection of old books.

You can start with a 500 GB console if you’re not sure what category you’ll fit into.

It won’t be too hard to improve it in the future.

Plus, features like Game Pass can help reduce the amount of space you need.

Even the newest Xbox One X models have versions that can only play digital games and don’t have a hard drive that’s 2 TB or bigger.

Even though cloud gaming may make it easier to limit how much storage you need in the future, I would still go for the bigger sizes.

You never know when you might want to play your console, but the internet isn’t great.

What Does 500 GB vs 1 TB Look Like?

I’ve made two separate lists to show you what the difference between a 500 GB console and a 1 TB console can look like.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the software that runs the XBOX One needs about 140 GB.

That means a 500 GB drive only has 360 GB of usable space and a 1 TB drive only has 862 GB of usable space.

500 GB:

  • Destiny 2 is 164 GB.
  • GTA V – 94 GB
  • Gears 5 is 64 GB
  • Dying Light is 32.5 GB.

1 TB:

Destiny 2 is 164 GB.

GTA V – 94 GB

Call of Duty: Warzone is 100 GB

Dying Light 2 is 32.5 GB and Red Dead Redemption 2 is 88.57 GB.

NBA 2k21 – 121 GB Gears 5 – 64 GB Dirt 5 – 78 GB

CyberPunk 2077 – 86 GB

It’s 9 to 4 if you use some of the games with the largest file sizes.

That’s not a completely accurate picture, since not all games take up that much space.

There are many great games between 1 GB and 30 GB in size.

It comes down to how much storage you can use and how many games you play.

If you like retro or classic games, you’ll be glad to hear that the file sizes of your favorites are among the smallest compared to AAA games.

Dead Cells, Hades, Castlevania, and a lot of other old and new platform games are usually 1 GB or less in size.

Should I get a bigger hard drive for my Xbox?

If you want to keep using your console for years to come and still have access to your digital library, you must replace the standard drive with a larger one.

Your XBOX One can have up to 16 TB of storage space on the inside.

But I would only go up to 8 TB because these drives are a lot easier to use.

Many people say that you should only use drives with a capacity of up to 4 TB because these are the most stable high-capacity consumer drives.

Most of the time, 4 TB is a lot of storage space and should be enough for most gamers.

That’s 3,860 GB of storage that can be used. Enough to put hundreds of games on one drive. If you want to push it, you can also use external storage devices by connecting them to a USB hub.

Each hard drive can’t have more than 16 TB.

I can’t think of a reason why you would need 16 TBs of storage just for gaming.

If you haven’t yet used all of the space on the hard drive that came with your XBOX One, just wait.

You’ll know if you need more space, and you’ll always have the option to add more.

As time goes on, it turns out to be a choice that costs less.

It’s important to remember that SSD drives are used in modern consoles like the PS5 and XBOX One Series X.

An SSD is also used in your Xbox One.

But SSDs are more expensive when you want to buy a lot of them.

You will need to know that your XBOX One uses the same standard hard drive connection that is used to install hard drives in laptops.

Since there are SSDs that use PCI ports and m.2 ports, you don’t want to end up with a drive that doesn’t fit in your XBOX.

SSDs are faster than HDDs and use less power. They are also more durable because they are stronger.
