We have certainly come a long way when it comes to fitness trackers.
Fitbit is one of the leading wearable devices on the market today, having been introduced back in September of 2009.
It should, of course, be water-resistant.
The price point of the newer Fitbits would make one expect that they would not have the most advanced features.
It must be noted, however, that the Fitbit Versa 2 is rated WR50.
WR50, what does that mean? WR stands for water resistance, but isn’t that the same as waterproofness? Well, it is not, and this is what may surprise some purchasers.
Fitbit Versa 2 waterproof?
It is not possible to waterproof the Fitbit Versa 2. There is no waterproof Fitbit. Rather, the Versa 2 is rated WR50, which means that it is equipped with the ability to withstand water pressure up to 50 meters.
Most fitness trackers are not waterproof, including the expensive Apple Watch models.
The majority of electronic devices are not waterproof.
It is extremely difficult – and very expensive – to design an electronic device that is completely waterproof.
It should be noted that “waterproof” is not an accurate and inaccurate term that is thrown around when referring to fitness trackers such as the Fitbit.
I was concerned about how to use my Fitbit Versa 2 when I purchased it. There were many things I could – and should not – do with it.
Can it withstand a few splashes, or can it be taken swimming in the lake with me? Since I live near several lakes, I spend a lot of time in the water, so I am interested in using my Fitbit to monitor my swimming exercises.
In the end, I carried out some research before putting my Versa 2 into the water. Its WR50 rating and what that means to me is what I will share with you.
What Is the Difference Between Waterproof and Water-Resistant Clothing?
The terms waterproof and water-resistant are not synonymous. Waterproof refers to an object that is completely impervious to water.
This means that water cannot penetrate it at all. It means that a material used in the design of the object has been treated with a coating that facilitates water repellency.
When something is water-resistant, the fabric is dense enough to prevent water from seeping in for a long time.
It is nevertheless possible for water to leak through.
A device that is WR50 rated – such as the Versa 2 – is water-resistant for up to 50 meters underwater.
The materials could fail if you dive below 50 meters, which would cause water to seep into the boat and cause damage.
What should I do if my Fitbit Versa 2 gets wet?
The first thing you need to know is that if your Fitbit Versa 2 is wet, don’t panic. It can withstand some water exposure.
It is advisable to clean the Fitbit after each exposure to moisture, just to be on the safe side and to ensure that it remains clean.
If the Versa 2 comes in contact with a liquid other than water, you should immediately clean it using fresh water and a cleanser-free cleaning agent.
It should then be dried with a lint-free cloth and allowed to sit for some time before being reused.
Can I wear the Fitbit Versa 2 while showering?
The Fitbit Versa 2 is capable of being worn while showering, but that does not mean you should.
It should be noted that liquids other than water, such as body wash and shampoo, contain harsh chemicals which can damage Fitbit’s internal components.
It is best to leave your Fitbit on the bathroom counter while you are taking a shower unless you are just rinsing off.
Isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?
Is the Fitbit Versa 2 waterproof?
Fitbit Versa 2 can be worn while swimming, as I mentioned previously.
It has some limitations, however.
It is advisable not to take it below a depth of 50 meters, and you should avoid doing any activity involving hard impacts, such as riding a jet ski or riding the back of a boat on an inner tube.
Fitbit Versa 2 can be destroyed by harsh impacts and crushing depths, so it is best to leave it at home.
What is the water-lock feature on the Fitbit Versa 2?
Before entering a swimming pool, lake, or ocean, you will need to turn on Water Lock manually.
You can accomplish this by navigating to your Fitbit’s Quick Settings, then selecting the Water Lock icon.
The icon depicts a droplet of water.
Tap twice firmly on the Versa 2’s screen after you have selected it. The Fitbit should now be protected from moisture.
How should I handle a water-damaged Versa 2?
If treated correctly, water damage is unlikely to occur but it is still possible on the Fitbit Versa 2. Your device may not function properly if this occurs.
After contacting Fitbit’s customer support, you may be required to return the Versa 2.
Fitbit users have indicated that the seals might not be up to par on certain models.
Closing Thoughts
There is no waterproofing on the Fitbit Versa 2. Fitness trackers are not universal, and if one is advertised as such, proceed with caution.
Does it resist water? Yes, but the seal can deteriorate over time, so be attentive to how you handle your Fitbit.
You might otherwise find yourself out $100+ and wishing that you could get your money back. Make sure you take proper care of your Fitbit Versa 2.
Even though it is made from water-resistant materials, it is susceptible to damage.
You should keep your Fitbit Versa 2 clean and dry after each use since no electronic device is foolproof. Thus, you will be extending its lifespan and maximizing your investment.
